Following serious concerns regarding the use of firecrackers after 10pm causing noise pollution, the Fiji Police Force is urging people to show common courtesy and respect for others and use firecrackers within the permitted time.

You can use fireworks from 5pm to midnight on Diwali this Friday however the permitted hours for any other day are from 5pm to 10pm.

According to the Explosives Act 1937, no one is permitted to use or discharge fireworks except during the permitted hours from 5pm to 10pm, however, an exception is made for Diwali each year.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACP) Livai Driu is urging members of the public to do the right thing.

He says it is difficult to track down those using firecrackers after the permitted hours, so they are banking on members of the public to do the right thing and adhere to the stipulated hours.

Meanwhile, the Director of the Mineral Resources Department, Doctor Apete Soro is urging people to use fireworks safely.

He says given that some parts of the country are experiencing a dry spell, he is cautioning people for not only their safety but for the safety of the community.
