The Fiji Police Force is calling on everyone living in low lying or flood prone areas to move to higher ground as continuous rain is expected throughout the night.

Chief Operations Officer Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Livai Driu says they have been receiving reports of flooding in the Eastern, Western Division and other parts of the country.

He says for their own safety, they should move now when there is still daylight.

Acting ACP Driu says in the past, members of the community usually call for assistance during the night when water level starts to rise, despite of their calls earlier to move to high places.

He says according to the weather advisories, rain will continue due to a low pressure over the group.

The Acting ACP further says if you are in the Western side of Fiji, especially the North West side and living in a flood prone area, please move now while there is still time.

ACP Driu says Police will be around patrolling flood prone areas and all stations have activated their standby teams.

A heavy rain warning remains in force for Sigatoka, Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Tavua and Rakiraki and Northern Bua, Macuata, Cikobia and Qelelevu in the Northern Vanua Levu, the Yasawa and Mamanuca Groups, Kadavu, Lau and Lomaiviti Group.

A heavy rain alert remains in force for the rest of the Fiji group.

The Weather Office says an active trough of low pressure lies slow moving to the west of Fiji and the associated rain bands continues to affect the Fiji group.

A flash flood warning remains in force for the low lying areas and flood prone areas within Penang, Nakauvadra and Tuva Rivers.

A flash flood alert remains in force for low lying and flood prone areas and areas close to small streams from Sigatoka to Rakiraki and Northern parts of Vanua Levu.

Some localised businesses likely to be affected while other impacts include flash flooding of low lying areas, localised flooding of Iris crossing and informal settlements and some disruption to traffic flow and poor visibility on land and sea.

The Weather Office says the weather is expected to clear out by Wednesday.
