With the school holidays approaching and concerns about the involvement of children in drug-related activities increasing, the Fiji Police Force, with the assistance of partner law enforcement agencies, is targeting those distributing and selling drugs.

Assistant Commissioner of Police – Operations (ACP) Livai Driu says this past week, several men and women appeared in court for the unlawful possession of illicit drugs of both white and green drugs throughout the five policing divisions.

He says those involved don’t care what happens to others, but they only care about filling their pockets.

ACP Driu says we cannot rule out children being targeted and enticed to get involved in pushing drugs as a means of earning a quick dollar.

He adds that officers have been visiting schools, meeting with teachers who will be bringing students to Suva, impressing on the need for supervision and constant reminders to be issued to students.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police is also appealing to parents and guardians not to let their guards down and keep talking to their children.

He says we must remain vigilant and keep talking, not only to our children, but to each other as parents and guardians, and be aware of what our children are doing and who they are spending their time with.

ACP Driu says drug operations have been focused on drug raids at the main ports of entry as there is a likelihood of increased movement of illicit drugs from the maritime islands.

He adds the Fiji Detector Dog Unit is a partnership between the Fiji Police Force, Fiji Revenue and Customs Service supported by New Zealand Police l and New Zealand Customs are working together to stop the flow of illicit drugs locally and into the country by strengthening partnerships between border agencies and law enforcement.
