Police are stepping up their operations from this month following serious concerns regarding the increasing number of cases relating to attacks, robberies, drug dealing, glue sniffing and selling of stolen items in Suva City and other areas in the country.

Director of Operations, SSP Kasiano Vusonilawe says as part of their operation, they will have police tents set up next to Suva City Library and Suva Handicraft Centre at night.

This is to eradicate the increasing attacks on people returning from nightclubs and restaurants at night, the selling of drugs and stolen items by some vendors along Victoria Parade, and people loitering and glue sniffing around that stretch of the city.

With many concerns also being raised about attacks and robberies, SSP Vusonilawe confirms that they will also set up police tents along Cumming Street, Stewart Street and Damodar City during the day.

SSP Vusonilawe confirms their focus is to deploy police officers in the city and town areas in the divisions to increase visibility, monitor the movement of people, get rid of loiterers and eradicate criminal elements.

He also reveals that they will target the loiterers and vendors along Victoria Parade at night.

They will also use sniffer dogs to get to the criminal elements.

SSP Vusonilawe says they have analysed the areas and all strategies will be fully implemented by Monday.

Their operations also include the setting up of CCTV cameras in the city with the Suva Retailers Association.

Police have done the survey on where the CCTV cameras are to be installed to assist in operations that will be linked to the Central Police Station which is also the Police Command Centre.

He says divisional operations will continue until July and they will assess and restrategize their plans and actions for August and September based on the needs of the public.

Serious concerns have been raised regarding many attacks and robberies by youths and street kids loitering in Suva City and the surrounding areas at night.

fijivillage News has been contacted by a number of people over the past month regarding attacks and robberies on the streets.

They say these people loitering in different parts of Suva are also getting daring and are now even attacking and robbing people in broad daylight.

There have been a number of attacks on people by youths along Waimanu Road, Stewart Street and Saint Fort Street.

These people are seen loitering around sniffing glue and there are allegations that they may also be high on drugs.

They are attacking people at random at any time of the day or night, and this is happening almost every day.

We have asked Police what type of action is being taken as there are also reports along Victoria Parade and surrounding areas where groups of youths are loitering and attacking and robbing people at night and early in the morning.

Many people who spoke to us have not reported the matter to Police as they believe no action is being taken.
