Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre Coordinator Shamima Ali says police officers usually go for reconciliation when there is a domestic violence case without realising the risk it poses to the lives of women.

While handing out certificates to 36 police officers who completed a five-day training facilitated by the FWCC, Ali says the training helped the officers have a better understanding on how to attend to cases of domestic violence.

She says the officers are now in a better position to respond appropriately.

She says the officers have also made a proposal to include training on how to deal with violence against women in their police academy recruit curriculum.

Ali says this is because most cases reported in their stations are of domestic violence.

Deputy Divisional Police Commander Southern, Vilimoni Komairasea says the training will help them improve their customer service when it comes to cases of domestic and gender-based violence.

Komairasea says they will ensure to provide respect and love to all the survivors who walk into the police stations and deal with the perpetrators accordingly.
