Residents of some areas in Nawaka who protested and asked for urgent food assistance have received their ration packs this afternoon from the Ministry of Economy.

The residents came out with placards today to protest and raised concerns that the food packs they receive from Government are not enough.

Onisimo Vaiyatayata of Tramline Settlement in Nawaka, Nadi says the food rations from the Government has been delivered this afternoon and they are very grateful for the quick response.

He says the rations include foodstuff and toiletries but he is also asking the Government if they could also provide baby diapers as they are re-using some of the old diapers.

Vaiyatayata says the protest today was because they need food for their families since the food rations provided last week is not enough for the whole family.

He says in some households, there are more than 10 people and they cannot go to work because of the lockdown.

The Nawaka resident adds they are hoping for the borders to open so they can return to work and provide for their families.

Another resident, Roshan Ali says the ration packs they are getting was not enough and it does not last them for two weeks.

Ali says people cannot help themselves because they are not working and this is why they are getting frustrated.

He says they had voiced their concerns to the relevant authorities but nothing was done about it which is why people came out to protest.

Meanwhile, police managed to control the situation earlier today and had informed the residents to return home peacefully with the help of the RFMF.

They also say a team from the Ministry of Economy was there to distribute food in Nawaka.

The area has been on lockdown since May 30th and people cannot move out to get food for their families or go out to their workplaces.
