Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew

The Fiji Police Force is warning parents and guardians to exercise due care when it comes to the discharge of their roles and responsibilities as primary care and welfare providers for their children.

Following a second incident of child abuse by a parent in as many days, Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew stresses that all reports and investigations of cases of child abuse and victimisation will be prioritised, with emphasis on ensuring those responsible are brought to justice.

Chew says child abuse is a community issue and everyone shares responsibility in dealing with the matter.

He says the welfare of a child is of paramount importance, and is warning parents and guardians to act in the best interests of their children at all times.

The Acting Commissioner says corporal punishment is illegal and a crime and Police will come down hard on those that are involved in the ill-treatment, abuse and any activity that is of potential harm to a child’s welfare, health and well-being.

If you need assistance or know someone who does in relation to child abuse and assault, then call the Child Helpline toll free number 1325.
