The Labasa Police are investigating a case of an alleged defilement of a 14-year-old student after the matter came to light when the girl’s parent took her to the Labasa Hospital, where she was confirmed to be pregnant.

Police say it is alleged that during November 2023, the girl and her boyfriend, while attending a sporting event at their school on a Saturday, went to an empty classroom where the suspect committed the alleged offence.

They say the victim relayed the incident to her parents after being bullied by her peers in school, and investigations are ongoing.

The Fiji Police Force is pleading with parents and guardians to regularly counsel their children and spend quality time talking about issues confronting the youths of today.

They say education and awareness are important for children to understand the consequences of their actions and how they can impact their education and future.

Police say they are facilitating this through school visitations where community policing efforts with stakeholders are talking about issues to prevent the harm it will cause.

They say programmes with the likes of the Crime Stoppers Scholastic Programme and BlueLight Youth and Leadership Development, specifically target empowerment programmes, through the sharing of information to assist children in making informed decisions when they are on their own.
