A 17-year-old student and an 18-year-old woman, who was stranded in the Waikalou River in Kalabu yesterday, were rescued by the quick reaction of officers at the Valelevu Police and the National Fire Authority.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACP) Livai Driu is calling on parents and guardians to monitor their children so they are not caught in dangerous situations.

He says the two were stranded on the banks after strong currents prevented them from crossing, whereby authorities were called in to assist the duo.

ACP Driu says officers were deployed and worked together to safely get the two across, where they were counselled and their parents informed of the situation before they could return to their homes.

He says as Fiji is well into its cyclone season, all weather warnings issued by authorities must be taken seriously to avoid injury or loss of life.

The Police Chief of Operations says disregarding warnings not only endangers the life of the individual but also risks the lives of the rescue team at risk.
