Discussions continue regarding the setting up of a “safe space” to help young children and youths who face drug abuse related issues.

It was discussed at length in a meeting between Chief Operations Officer ACP Abdul Khan, Founder of the Ministry of MOMs Group Ellana Kalounisiga and Drug-Free World Director Kalesi Volatabu.

Kalounisiga says their outreach work with students had noted a worrying trend that needed urgent attention.

She says the information children have on drugs is quite alarming and there is a need to create a safe space where students can come and spend time to exchange information and keep them from falling on the wrong side of the law.

Volatabu says she felt there was a lot that could be gained from the setting up of the Centre.

She says if they establish a safe space where people can go without fear of intimidation, she believes that it will complement the operational efforts by Police in fighting the drug trade.

ACP Khan was happy with the outcome of the meeting as it would ensure a holistic approach in tackling the issue.

He says their focus is on the arrest of suspects, seizure and destruction of illicit substances.

ACP Khan says when it comes to the social impacts of the illicit trade this is where they rely on various stakeholders who are experts in their respective fields and they will do what they can to assist.
