The Northern Air Britten Norman Islander (BN2A) aircraft incident in Gau Aerodrome yesterday has been classified as an accident and an Aircraft Accident Investigator who will conduct a thorough investigation has been identified.

This has been confirmed by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka who says the two crew members and three passengers were safely evacuated from the aircraft, and no injuries were reported.

He says upon landing at Gau Aerodrome, the aircraft landed beyond the designated landing area and sustained significant damage after colliding with a rock mound at the runway’s end.

Gavoka says immediate emergency response procedures were activated.

He says in accordance with Section 12 of the Civil Aviation (Occurrence Reporting and Investigation) Regulation 2009, he has identified an Aircraft Accident Investigator.

The Deputy Prime Minister says their primary objective is accident prevention, rather than assigning blame or liability.

Police were at the crash landing scene yesterday conducting investigations.

They will reveal more details based on their assessment.
