If your pet dogs are stolen then you should report the matter to the police as Ba based dog sanctuary, Greater Good Foundation is raising concerns that dogs are being stolen in the west and tortured for pig hunting.

Foundation spokesperson, Mohammed Shaheez Khan says it is a common practice for pig hunters to steal dogs, cut off their ears, starve them and tie and drag them with barbed wires around their neck.

He says healthy dogs are being stolen from urban areas and these thieves are then transferring the dogs to pig hunters in markets in the west on Fridays and Saturdays.

Khan says it is a worry that people are not raising concerns as perhaps they are not aware of the current laws that are in place to protect animals.

According to the Protection of Animals Act, any person found guilty of animal cruelty can be fined up to $100 or faces 6 months imprisonment or both.

Khan has also highlighted that the Foundation is taking care of more than 160 dogs and are under a lot of strain because of lack of resources and volunteers.

He says they are in no condition to take in more dogs but are often helpless as people are abandoning puppies at their gates.

Khan adds that they are also in need of a vet who could desex dogs at the Foundation.

He is also urging Fijians to desex their pets so that it does not add to the problem of stray dogs on our streets. You can contact the Greater Good Foundation on 8640200 if you want to assist them.
