People are frustrated over the neglected road conditions along Kings and Queen highways for the past few months, causing damage to vehicles.

fijivillage News has also received several concerns about the road conditions in Khalsa Road, Tovata, Tamavua Village and Upper Ragg Avenue.

These areas have multiple potholes that can cause vehicle damage, accidents and claim the lives of people.

Some Khalsa Road residents say the road close to the Digicel Office is being fixed almost every month however, the potholes open up in a few days.

They also say it’s worrying to see the contractors doing road works during rainy weather, and is questioning how would this help to fix the issue.

A 23 year old resident says taxpayers’ money is going down the drain when necessary infrastructure work is done during the bad weather conditions as it makes no sense.

A Year 13 student from Tovata Road says the road condition has continued to worsen over time as potholes have not been attended to and given priority.

Meanwhile, people have also raised concerns about good roads and footpaths being dug, and they are trying to understand the logic behind this as funds could be allocated for other purposes.

While responding to our questions, the Fiji Roads Authority says they are currently focused on addressing the backlog of road maintenance works that has accumulated due to delays in the supply of bitumen.

They say they are particularly attentive to areas that may be more vulnerable to heavy rainfall and its impacts on road infrastructure.

In addition to routine pothole patching and maintenance, they are implementing more resilient methods for road rehabilitation to better withstand the effects of climate change, this includes enhanced designs and materials aimed at improving durability and reducing future repair needs.

They say maintenance work is an ongoing priority, and they are addressing the issues of potholes along highways and main roads to enhance safety for all users.

When asked how is the Authority monitoring the contractors after the work is done, FRA says they have enhanced the monitoring to ensure that all road works meet high standards of quality and there is implementation of rigorous quality controls, which include regular inspections and assessments of completed work.

They add they are making concerted efforts to expedite road works and maintenance, particularly after experiencing delays in the supply of bitumen from the suppliers.
