In the wake of recent incidents that have highlighted lapses in compliance that compromised passenger safety, the Land Transport Authority has issued a firm reminder to all Public Service Vehicle drivers to strictly adhere to the established code of conduct, emphasizing the paramount importance of ensuring the safety of both passengers and pedestrians.

LTA Acting Chief Executive Officer, Irimaia Rokosawa says these unfortunate incidents highlighted the critical need for heightened awareness and adherence to road safety measures among all road users.

Rokosawa says safety on Fiji’s roads is a shared responsibility and calls on all road users to be mindful of their surroundings and behaviours to prevent such road tragedies.

He says to enhance road safety, the LTA will continue to strengthen public awareness initiatives and enforce stringent safety protocols.

PSV drivers are also reminded of their critical responsibility to ensure the safety of their passengers.

He further says according to the PSV Drivers Code of Conduct on passenger safety, drivers must take all reasonable precautions to ensure passengers’ safety while boarding or exiting the vehicle.

The Acting CEO says PSV drivers must wait until passengers are properly seated or have safely exited the vehicle before moving, and avoid picking up or dropping off passengers in hazardous locations such as the middle of the road, at roundabouts, at traffic lights, or on bridges.

He adds drivers must remain alert at all times, especially when children are involved and they urge everyone to exercise good judgment and caution when navigating the road.
