Parmen Nursery to assist farmers in Sigatoka

Minister for Agriculture, Waterways and Environment the Dr Mahendra Reddy shakes the hand of Mr Parmen Singh.

Good news for more than 1,000 farmers in Sigatoka as they now can purchase seedlings at a very low cost after the commissioning of the Parmen Nursery at Nabitu Settlement.

The nursery was constructed by Nabitu resident Parmen Singh who has been assisting Sigatoka farmers with seedlings and planting materials since Tropical Cyclone Harold.

Singh says he volunteered to construct the nursery because he saw the need in the area. He says this is also for farmers on the other side of the Sigatoka River especially after Cyclone Harold hit the country in April this year and destroyed their crops.

He says he has already given more than 1,000 trays of seedlings to farmers in Keiyasi for free.

Singh adds that he has submitted his request to the Ministry of Agriculture to expand his nursery so that he can assist more farmers.

Meanwhile, Minister for Agriculture Dr Mahendra Reddy says this nursery will give new hope to farmers where they will be able to receive planting materials or seedlings at a very low cost.

He says they would like to applaud Singh for taking the initiative to construct the nursery where it will cater to farmers on both sides of the Sigatoka River.
