PSV drivers should get drug tested – Ro Filipe

Minister for Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau

Minister for Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau has agreed that Public Service Vehicle drivers should undergo random mandatory drug tests.

This is after growing concerns regarding some PSV drivers allegedly driving after using methamphetamine and marijuana.

Many people have raised concerns regarding this issue as they allege that some PSV drivers are taking methamphetamine to stay awake for long hours.

They want random drug tests and mandatory tests to also be conducted when the PSV drivers are renewing their licences.

When questioned by fijivillage News, Ro Filipe says drug tests are something that they need to do just like a breathalyzer test for PSV drivers.

He says they have seen the increase in drug use in our society according to figures provided by the Police.

The Minister says it defies logic how some of the recent accidents are happening.

He says while driving, drivers will be worrying about the speed they are travelling at, while some of these drivers do not have the same rationality.

Ro Filipe says they will be ramping up operations heading into the festive season and he has met with stakeholders including the Police and the LTA.

He adds he has impressed upon them the need to move as soon as possible and they are undertaking some measures but they need to intensify their operations given the urgency of the issue.
