Pacific Recycling Foundation and The University of Fiji are delighted to announce their partnership in the area of waste management and recycling.

Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited CEO and PRF Founder, Mr. Amitesh Deo said their collaboration with Uni Fiji involves the collection of recyclables from Samabula and Saweni campuses as well as a tailor-made training program on waste management and recycling for the University’s staff.

“We commend Uni Fiji for aligning their sustainability program with PRF’s waste management and recycling programs. This alliance will not only result in the capturing of recyclables that would have ended at dumpsites but will also give PRF an opportunity to inculcate best practices of proper waste management and recycling in the wider University environment,” said Mr. Deo.

He said this is a welcome move and comes at a critical time when they are tirelessly working to change mindsets and behaviour.

Mr. Deo added that PRF with the assistance of its partners is currently running two recycling projects in Fiji and hopes to extend its reach to more communities and schools in the near future.

“We also want to take this opportunity to urge those that are involved in waste management to start thinking about the benefits of recycling as many waste materials like paper, cardboards, PET bottles, tin cans, aluminum cans, and metal can be recycled,” said Mr. Deo.

Uni Fiji’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shaista Shameem said they are pleased that through this partnership, PRF and WRFL will work with the University to manage and recycle waste materials that are generated at their campuses in Samabula and Saweni.

She said the University is also looking at hosting a one-day workshop where PRF will educate the staff about waste management, sorting of recyclables, and innovative ways of keeping the environment clean.

Professor Shameem added that this initiative is aligned with community engagement, environmental, and social responsibility goals under Uni Fiji’s Strategic Plan 2022-2026.
