Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has urged the Fiji National Sports Commission to seek more ways to make young girls and women feel welcome in whatever athletic pursuits they choose.

Bainimarama highlighted this while officiating at the 2022 Fiji National Sports Commission conference today.

He says it requires daily commitment to erode age old stigma and the government he leads is prepared to give that commitment.

Bainimarama says there are other sports outside of rugby that Fiji can do very well in or dominate.

Bainimarama says prior to 2011, Fiji was not the sporting power house as there was a lack of vision not only to achieve global glory or earn a decent living, but to simply make sport and exercise a bigger part of their life.

He says they made it a mission to transport sports in Fiji not only to make it more unifying force for the country, but to make it a professional and profitable industry for the benefit of men and women both.

Bainimarama says they wanted Fiji to become the heart of athletic excellence in the Pacific, and a respected and world renowned sporting destination.

Bainimarama says this conference creates dialogue between government, the commission, sports leaders and athletes on how they can develop different sports, how they can maximize performance and how they can involve mobile people in athletics.
