Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says he cannot interfere with the Fiji Airways board and management decision to re-hire workers that were let go earlier this year.

A former flight attendant of Fiji Airways, Orisi Rayaqona had requested Bainimarama if he could assist the workers that were terminated in May this year in getting their jobs back with Fiji Airways as they are recruiting again.

Rayaqona who has worked for the company for the last 30 years says he is bringing the matter to the leader of the nation, with the hope of getting assistance.

The Prime Minister says unfortunately, he cannot do anything about it.

He says he never interferes with any board and any chairmanship of any board.

Bainimarama says he always leaves it to the board and the CEOs to decide what is good for the company.

The Prime Minister visited the Nadi International Airport where he thanked the skeleton staff of Fiji Airways and other relevant agencies on the ground for their excellent services during this COVID-19 pandemic.

Bainimarama says he conveyed the Fijian Government’s appreciation to the staff for their commitment and tireless efforts in ensuring Fiji’s borders are COVID-contained. Being exposed to high COVID-19 risks, Bainimarama says the ongoing shifts and extra precautionary measures taken by the staff at the airport during this ongoing crisis is commendable.

Bainimarama was also briefed by the Fiji Airways management on the company’s strategic measures in handling the pandemic, its recruitment process, quarantine measures and discussions on the ongoing travel bubble plans.

The Fiji Airways management also revealed to the Prime Minister that the company is ready to fully operate once the borders re-open.
