PM praises Team Fiji athletes who returned home after the Pacific Games

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has praised the first batch of Team Fiji athletes and officials who have returned to Fiji from the Pacific Games 2023 in the Solomon Islands after their respective events concluded last week.

While welcoming the team in Nadi, Rabuka says that they have made the nation proud for their achievements and for representing Fiji on the international stage. He says as someone who understands the weight of representing Fiji, these athletes carry not only the hopes and dreams of their teammates but also the wishes and support of the entire nation.

The Prime Minister urged the athletes to continue serving as role models to their peers, particularly in light of the recent parliamentary discussions on empowering the country's youth and also good sportsmanship.

He also reminded the athletes that setting examples of hard work, sacrifice, and dedication, by athletes can motivate and inspire the younger generation to pursue their dreams and reach their full potential.

The teams that arrived yesterday include the Men's and Women's Basketball teams, Men's and Women's 7s Rugby teams, Swimming, Weightlifting teams, and the Men's and Women's Volleyball teams.

Week 2 of the Pacific Games 2023 has kicked off today and Team Fiji will be featuring in 8 sports today including athletics, boxing, football, netball, sailing, tennis, touch rugby and va’a.

Team Fiji is currently in 5th place in the overall Pacific Games medal tally with 10 gold, 16 silver, and 16 bronze medals.

New Caledonia is leading with 54 gold, 37 silver and 34 bronze, while Australia is in second place with 28 gold, 19 silver and 8 bronze.
