800 Fijians employed in the Cook Islands in the private and public sectors have contributed significantly to both economies.

This was highlighted by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama during the official opening of the Office of the Cook Islands High Commission last night.

He says, when the borders of the two nations were closed due to the pandemic, both Prime Ministers pushed hard to re-open the region and ensure that travel bubbles reached further than the Tasman Sea.

Bainimarama says both nations succeeded and thousands of people returned to the jobs they love.

He adds that he's confident that our pandemic recovery will create more opportunities that both nations can and should seize together.

Speaking on behalf of the Cook Islands, Prime Minister Mark Brown says the opening of the Office of the Cook Islands Commission in Fiji has paved the way forward for more development of the two nations.

The Office was opened by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, the Secretary-General of the Pacific Islands Forum Henry Puna and the Cook Islands Prime Minister, Mark Brown.

Also attending the event were the Leader of SODELPA, Viliame Gavoka, the Leader of People's Alliance Sitiveni Rabuka, the Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, the New Zealand High Commissioner Charlotte Darlow, the British High Commission's Paul Welsh, the US Chargé d'Affaires Tony Greubel, other foreign dignitaries and the Cook Islands community in Fiji.
