PM nominates 3 members to PSC including the Chair while LOP gets to nominate Raju and Hazelman

Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka has nominated 3 members to the Public Service Commission including the Chairperson, Luke Rokovada while Rabuka offered Leader of Opposition, Voreqe Bainimarama to put up 2 nominees for appointment to the PSC.

Rabuka as Prime Minister and Chairperson of the Constitutional Offices Commission nominated former senior civil servant Rokovada, retired teacher and former Chief Operating Officer of Free Bird Institute Mereseini Baleilevuka, and Rewa chief and chairman of Rewa Provincial Council Ro Vilitati Mataitini.

Bainimarama has nominated Fiji Care Executive Director, Avi Raju and business executive, Nesbitt Hazelman after Rabuka's offer to nominate 2.

Mahmood Khan who is part of the former PSC refused to resign.

His term ends in March.

Rabuka will nominate Khan's replacement when he goes in March.

This means the Prime Minister currently has 3 appointees to the Commission, Leader of Opposition 2 and 1 previous appointee staying on till March.

Other board members including former PSC Chair, Vishnu Mohan have resigned. According section 126 of the Constitution, the Public Service Commission has to appoint permanent secretaries, with the agreement of the Prime Minister; to remove permanent secretaries, with the agreement of the Prime Minister; to institute disciplinary action against permanent secretaries; and to make such other appointments and perform such other duties, functions and responsibilities as may be prescribed by written law.
