Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka

Following allegations that a member of the LGBTIQ+ community was driven to take their own life after getting cyberbullied, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has reiterated the role the Online Safety Commission plays and says the Commission should be watching statements made online by members of the public.

Rabuka says the Commission will only work on official reports they receive from the general public or any personnel regarding cyberbullying.

Rabuka says whether the Commission is operating or not is another question.

He stresses the importance of lodging a formal complaint to the Commission and only then will the Commission investigate the matter.

Meanwhile, Police will also seek legal advice from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions regarding the death.

Assistant Commissioner of Police-Crime, ACP Mesake Waqa says they cannot venture into the circumstances surrounding the death because that will be part of the investigation process.

The Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission has filed a complaint with both the Fiji Police Force and the Online Safety Commission to investigate the death and hold the perpetrators accountable.

The Online Safety Commission has yet to respond to our questions.
