Veiraisi Settlement in Nadera

Over 21 families from Veiraisi Settlement in Nadera will be evicted from the area soon following a court order.

Marama Vakatalai is from one of the families that have been told to move from the settlement.

Unlike the other families, she has had to move her family’s belongings to a neighbour's house after men appointed by the Suva High Court came to dismantle her house yesterday.

Vakatalai says she and her husband have been living there for over 30 years and she claims they have an agreement with the Nasinu Land Purchase and Housing Co-operative Society Limited, which is also the company behind the eviction.

She says that she begged the judicial officer that were there to supervise the dismantling this morning to please wait for her husband who is coming this evening but he said he is just doing his job.

Vakatalai says she and her husband had just been assured last week that their home would not be uprooted which is why he returned to their farm in Vanua Levu.

We also spoke to Tevita Vuibau from the community who says that he has tried reaching out to the Director of Housing from the Ministry of Housing but they cannot do anything.

Vuibau says when he reached out to the Prime Minister for assistance, he was told to pack and go.

At the moment, these families in Veiraisi are just counting down the hours till the men with the court order come knocking to dismantle their homes.

We are still trying to get more information.

Stay with us for developments.
