Online Safety Commission cannot take action against calls made on social media for people to be raped unless a complaint is made

The Online Safety Commissioner Anne Dunn-Baleilevuka says there is nothing that they can do about calls made for people to be raped on social media unless there is a complaint filed with the commission.

A man and a woman who spoke out against former Fiji 7s player Amenoni Nasilasila training with the Namosi Rugby Team while serving an 8 year sentence for raping a woman, were attacked on social media by some people.

One woman who shared her story as a rape survivor was attacked on facebook by a man who called for her to be raped again.

Police have confirmed that the woman has filed a complaint and investigations are continuing.

Human rights activist, Kris Prasad who has been publicly voicing his concerns from the start has also been subjected to racist name-calling and remarks on social media. Prasad has also been sworn at and body shamed.

Baleilevuka says they have attempted to reach out to people who have been victims of these horrific comments, they have have asked them to report the matter to the commission.

She says people do not need to physically come to their office in Suva to lodge a complaint, however it is also an avenue to do so. Baleilevuka adds that people can call their mobile number 9980242 and also lodge a complaint on their website through the complaints tab.

She says it would be a different story if these comments were made against the family members or loved ones of the people who have called for the rape of others.
