Minister of Housing, Maciu Nalumisa

More than 200 families in the Fiji Muslim League settlement in Nabua can now celebrate Christmas without a worry about a roof over their head as a one-year timeframe has been set by the Ministry of Housing, the Fiji Muslim League, and other stakeholders to collaborate and develop relocation plans.

Minister of Housing, Maciu Nalumisa, has informed the residents of the settlement that it is crucial to understand who owns the land they are living on.

Nalumisa says, in this case, the land is owned by the Fiji Muslim League, and they have every right to develop it.

The Minister adds the government, in collaboration with the Fiji Muslim League, is exploring options to assist the residents with relocation.

Marikarita Ranadiniwailase, who has been living in the settlement for 20 years, says the Minister’s statement assures them that the government will assist them, bringing relief from their previous worries.

Ranadiniwailase says when they first received the eviction notice, they were overwhelmed with thoughts about how they could meet all the requirements within 30 days.

She adds they are willing to work together with the government to find a way forward.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Housing will conduct a three-week survey to collect data from the settlement beginning this Friday.
