Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew says front-line officers have been warned accordingly on how to handle domestic violence cases.

This comes as Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre Coordinator Shamima Ali has highlighted that they are trying to talk to the Police about training officers on how to respond to reports of sexual and domestic violence and that more women are confident in reporting their issues, such as rape and sexual assaults, to their Office rather than to the Police as they feel that Police officers don’t listen to women or don’t treat domestic violence cases seriously.

While responding to the comments, Chew says members of the public have the freedom to whom to report to, and if they choose FWCC apart from the police, it is their choice.

He says they also receive reports of this nature, and necessary investigation have been done under their no drop policy.

He adds their officers based in the Sexual Offences Unit are providing the necessary guidance in many similar investigation.
