The Office of the Divisional Commissioner North has confirmed that proactive steps are being taken to prepare for wet weather conditions over the next 48 hours, and the Ministry of Education has been informed to prepare schools as evacuation centres should the need arise.

Earlier today, the Divisional Commissioner North Uraia Rainima, met with team leaders from essential services, including the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), the Police and Fire Services, Ministry of Education, Fiji Red Cross, Fiji Meteorological Services, and Land Transport Authority to finalize operational plans and ensure resources are ready to assist affected communities.

The Commissioners Office says the FRA has reported that connecting roads across the island remain clear, and accessibility is not currently impacted, despite heavy rain overnight.

They say updates from the Fiji Meteorological Service have provided a detailed forecast, enabling stakeholders to refine their preparedness strategies.

They are urging residents in low-lying areas to prepare now, and move to higher ground during daylight hours to minimize risks.

Avoid unnecessary movement at night to ensure safety and reduce risks for first responders.

They say if unsure of evacuation centres or in need of assistance, contact the local authorities or police immediately.

Rainima urges farmers to move their livestock to higher ground and take necessary precautions to secure their livelihoods.

He says they are urging everyone to prioritize their safety during this time.

Commissioner North says listen carefully to weather advisories and updates on the radio and take early action to prepare, especially those in low-lying areas.

He adds people must avoid unnecessary movement at night and remember that people's safety is their top priority.

Rainima urges the public not to hesitate to reach them if they need assistance.

The Commissioner’s Office will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide timely updates, and residents are advised to stay informed through official announcements and cooperate with emergency services.

For assistance, please contact:

– Commissioner Northern’s Office:8811322 or 8811005

– Commissioner Northern’s Direct-Line: 9994261

– Nearest Police Station: contact local stations for emergency
