Studying in damaged classrooms will be a thing of the past for the students of Namalata Central School in Kadavu after the construction of three new classroom buildings and receiving furniture worth $326,000 from the Government of Japan through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects Program.

First Secretary and Head of Official Development Assistance at the Embassy of Japan in Fiji, Hiroki Tazawa says they are thrilled to be able to support the education of students at Namalata Central School.

He says they chose this school because it was damaged during Tropical Cyclone Harold in 2020 and TC Winston in 2016.

Tazawa says when they saw the condition of the school, it wasn’t suitable for children to learn as teachers have to use small spaces to teach a high number of students.

He says they took up the challenge to build a better environment for the students to learn.

Tazawa adds the new buildings can also be used by villagers and nearby communities as an evacuation centre during a cyclone.

While receiving the new buildings, Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro acknowledged the support of the Government of Japan and also encouraged the students of Namalata Central School to work hard so they can become great leaders of Fiji in the future.
