More police officers will be pushed out on the streets from tonight as nightclubs close at 1am.

This follows the change to the Liquor Amendment Act in parliament and the date gazetted by Attorney General, Siromi Turaga.

Acting Police Commissioner, ACP Livai Driu says more officers will be out in anticipation of the change of nightclub operating hours and the likely spill-over of nightlife social activities into residential areas.

ACP Driu says the main focus is to ensure everyone enjoys their weekend without any major incident.

The Acting Commissioner says information has been gathered of the trend of ‘transporters’ who are paid to purchase alcohol from black market operators and deliver it to those looking to pay the extra dollar without the associated risks.

He has warned that police are well aware of this trend, and will be monitoring black markets and known drinking spots and clamp down on those intending to break the law and are a nuisance to other members of the public.

ACP Driu says Police have, throughout the week, issued reminders to operators and security personnel of the need to adhere to the new hours.
