The coalition government has approved the review of the opening hours of nightclubs in relation to the permitted hours during which liquor can be sold.

Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka says cabinet has decided that a review should be conducted.

Nightclub opening hours are currently authorised from 5pm to 5am for designated zones.

Rabuka says in recent years there have been numerous reports of brawls, robberies and attacks in areas around nightclubs in the designated zones in the early hours.

He says this has also resulted in loss of lives.

Rabuka confirms the Fiji Police Force made submissions for a review of the opening hours for nightclubs given ongoing assaults, violence and robberies are a cause for concern and pose a risk to the safety of citizens.

The review will include representatives from the Home Affairs Ministry and the Attorney General's Office.

Chief of Intelligence and Investigations, ACP Sakeo Raikaci confirms the case has been classified as murder as the post mortem results confirmed he died of injuries sustained from the assault.

Investigators continue with the gathering of statements and information including reviewing of CCTV footage.

When asked by fijivillage News on whether a group of men had beaten up the man outside the nightclub, Police said that no further comments will be made at this stage as they need to review all the CCTV footage gathered.

When asked on more Police presence, Chief Operations Officer ACP Livai Driu says more patrols will be conducted and they also urge members of the public to assist by being responsible with their safety as the excessive consumption of alcohol will hinder one’s ability to make decisions about their safety and wellbeing.
