Great news for nearly 100 Collection Pillars of Recycling (CPR) at the Maururu Dumpsite in Ba as they now have a portable washroom and breakroom facility after the facility was opened yesterday.

Pacific Recycling Foundation in partnership with GlobalGiving, R C Manubhai Group of Companies, and the Ba Town Council worked together to construct the facility.

PRF says this was a historic occasion for Collection Pillars of Recycling who, for decades, have tirelessly collected recyclables for their daily survival without access to essential amenities such as water, washrooms, and clean, dignified spaces for meals or rest.

They say these unsung heroes, comprising women, members of the LGBTQI+ community, and men from some of the most marginalised and vulnerable communities, endure immense stigma while playing a vital role in dealing with the country's waste crisis, extending the lifespan of dumpsite, and reducing carbon emissions.

The Foundation says this initiative follows the successful launch of a similar facility at Vunato Dumpsite last year, marking PRF’s continued commitment to improving the working and living conditions of the CPR communities.

PRF Founder, Amitesh Deo says despite their critical contributions, CPR have long been underappreciated, unrecognised, and inadequately compensated.

He says these workers deserve access to essential services, support from various stakeholders, including the government and municipalities, and recognition as essential workers with allowances and health benefits.

Deo says this dignity facility in Ba represents more than just infrastructure; it symbolises respect and recognition for the invaluable work these individuals do every day.

He says their goal is to provide them with the dignity they deserve and to inspire other stakeholders to join them in this mission.

GlobalGiving’s Vice President for Global Community Programs and Partnerships, Rachel Smith says Ford Philanthropy has been partnered with GlobalGiving for 13 years and together, they continue to empower communities through education, entrepreneurship, and essential services.

R C Manubhai Group of Companies CEO Uppiliappan Gopalan says their collaboration with PRF and commitment towards ESG has been instrumental in bringing this project to fruition.

He says this facility is a testament to their dedication to improving the working and living conditions of those who contribute to a cleaner environment.

Ba Town Council’s Acting CEO, Renal Prasad says they are proud to be part of this initiative.

He says they must ensure that those who work tirelessly to keep the environment clean and sustainable are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.

PRF Founder, Amitesh Deo also acknowledged support partners such as Rooster Chicken, Vivid Media, and RB Patel Group Limited for partnering with PRF for the event.
