The days of looking around for materials to hold a village function at Navuniivi Village in Ra will now be a thing of the past after the village Women’s Group received kitchen items from the Prime Minister’s Office worth more than $5,000.

Group President Sereana Macedru says the days of looking around for pots and items such as burners and electric urns are gone with the arrival of the donated items.

She says they are overwhelmed because they had raised it during the Provincial Council meeting held at Nanukuloa Village a few days ago, and now the items have been delivered.

She says Navuniivi is a big village, and they often have to ask around for cooking items from households in the village to fulfil their obligations during a village function.

Macedru says now they will not have to look around, and she also extended her gratitude to the Prime Minister and his officials for hearing their plea.

She also expressed gratitude to the village men who have always supported women in their endeavours.

She assured the Government the items will be put to good use for the benefit of the Navuniivi Women’s Group.

Officiating at the handing-over ceremony, the Head of Finance and Administration in the Office of the Prime Minister, Moape Rokosuka, says the assistance by the Office of the Prime Minister is part of the Government's commitment for the development of women across the country.

He says the assistance has been an ongoing programme with their Office over the years, and many women’s groups have been assisted through various means.

Rokosuka says this is their commitment towards the development of womenfolk in the rural communities.

He adds when such assistance is rendered, many other things can be borne out of it, and one is the hiring of the cooking items which can generate revenue for the Women’s Group, and in turn finance other areas of development they have identified.

Rokosuka says the equipment is handed over in good faith with the hope that it will be taken care of and used in the coming years.

Meanwhile, a team from the Ministry of Health based in Rakiraki was also at the village to carry out awareness on breast cancer and conduct medical checks for villagers.
