Nasinu Town Council to complete rubbish clean-up in coming weeks after residents raise concerns

Following concerns raised by Nasinu residents on the significant rubbish pile-ups in areas such as Makoi, Tovata, Rosehill, Tuirara and several other unidentified locations, Nasinu Town Council Chairman Felix Magnus says the clean-up will be completed in a few weeks.

While responding to questions by fijivillage News, Magnus says the Council is mobilising additional waste collection teams and setting up temporary waste disposal sites to manage the issue raised.

Magnus says they are also aware of the issue and are focusing on high-traffic areas and are coordinating with local volunteers to speed up the clean-up process.

He says regular updates will be provided to keep residents informed where the Council is also investing in long-term solutions like recycling and composting processors to reduce landfill use.

Magnus says challenges that contributed to delays which included issues with white goods and green waste collections dating back to April this year.

The Chairman says continuous illegal dumping has also increased waste volumes which complicates the clean-up efforts but despite these challenges, the Council is working on clearing the backlog as quickly as possible.

When questioned by fijivillage News about plans to prevent similar issues, Magnus says the Council is enhancing waste management by upgrading infrastructure and increasing the frequency of pickups.

He says a new fleet of waste management trucks is on standby, which awaits final approvals, will improve the efficiency of future operations.

The Chairman further says public education campaigns are also being rolled out to encourage responsible waste disposal practices.

He adds that from January to date, 111 people have been charged for litter infringement which highlights the Council’s commitment to enforce waste management regulations.

Magnus is urging residents for their patience as the Council implements new strategies and encourages the community to engage with the quick response team to report issues promptly.
