New Zealand’s High Commissioner to Fiji Jonathan Curr says they have heard Fiji's request for a travel bubble and have acknowledged as it is needed for Fiji’s economic recovery, but it will be up to the new New Zealand cabinet.

Curr highlighted this during the Business Link Pacific Networking Event.

He says the New Zealand government is still being formed under Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and it will be for the new cabinet to comment further on the prospects and timing of the travel bubble.

Curr says the bubble is also a significant piece of work for him and his team at the High Commission.

He says New Zealand and Fijian officials have been involved in exploratory conversations ready about possibilities for recommencing travel between the two countries.

Curr says there are also ongoing discussions between New Zealand and Australia on the Trans-Tasman safe travel zone which will include Cook Islands, Niue and Tokelau.

He says once this is up and running they will explore opportunities to expand this concept to other members of the Pacific family such as Fiji.

Curr says they also need to look at alternative means to support economic recovery and identify opportunities available to them at the current time.

The High Commissioner also commended Fiji’s Public Health Response in containing COVID-19.
