Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern

New Zealand has committed $1.3 billion over four years to support countries most vulnerable to the effects of climate change and at least 50% of the funding will come to the Pacific.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says they will do their fair share in the global race to tackle climate change and assist lower income countries to protect lives, livelihoods and infrastructure.

Ardern says she has seen and heard first-hand the impact of climate change in our region.

She says they need to continue to step up their support for Pacific Island countries who are on the front line of climate change.

Ardern says the investment will enable New Zealand to support clean energy projects in developing countries, ensure buildings are able to withstand more damaging storms, crops are resilient to droughts and floods, and communities are protected from sea level rise and storm surges.

She adds with the climate change clock ticking, it is important they lift their contribution now and bring it in line with other countries.
