National Federation Party Leader Professor Biman Prasad is asking how the Water Authority of Fiji has used over $1.6 billion allocated for capital investment in the last 10 budgets since 2012.

Prasad says he is asking these questions after WAF admitted it needs $3 billion to improve infrastructure.

Questions and requests for a response sent to WAF last week remain unanswered.

WAF told us on Sunday they were preparing a response.

We have also asked the Permanent Secretary for Economy Shiri Gounder and Minister for Infrastructure Jone Usamate.

In a statement, Prasad says in the last ten budgets since 2012, WAF was allocated almost $2.3 billion.

He says out of this more than $1.66 billion has been capital grants or for investment into infrastructure improvement.

Prasad is asking if the Government really fully honoured its budgetary commitment.

The NFP Leader is questioning if tender processes were followed and procurement measures complied with while purchasing equipment as part of several announced upgrade programs over the last decade.

Water Authority of Fiji Chief Operating Officer Seru Soderberg had confirmed that it will take $2b to $3 billion to fix their ageing infrastructure in the Suva to Nausori corridor.

Soderberg said this is not a cheap exercise and it is part of their 20-year master plan which started from 2013.

He said the biggest component of this plan is the Viria Water Project where Government has put in a lot of money.

The Water Authority of Fiji has been allocated $194.9 million in the 2021/2022 National Budget.
