NFP promises to slash Ministers salaries by one-third, repeal iTaukei Land Trust Act 2021, return USP VC to Fiji and begin prep for Local Govt elections

NFP Leader, Professor Biman Prasad

The National Federation Party has today released their Vision for Fiji ahead of the general elections next week where they say in the first 100 days they will slash Government Ministers salaries and allowances by one-third, request the Auditor General to help the Economy Ministry cut overspending, repeal the iTaukei Land Trust Act 2021 previously known as Bill 17, return the USP Vice Chancellor Pal Ahluwalia to Fiji and inquire into millions of dollars wasted on the Walesi project.

While speaking at the launch of their vision, Party Leader, Professor Biman Prasad says when they come into Government with the People’s Alliance, they will look for the best solutions together and govern through compromise and dialogue.

He say some of their priorities are different to theirs and that is okay as that is what they agreed when they signed their Partnership Agreement.

Professor Prasad says after they get into government, they will open the books as they do not know what sort of mess they will find.

The NFP Leader also raised the issue of a government minister allegedly having a mobile phone bill of $16,000 in September.

He says they know about the debt but they do not know about the extent of waste, pilferage and corruption they will find.

Professor Prasad says they will end the motorcades and the flashy Government cars to remind everyone, including themselves, that they are the servants of the people and not their masters.

The NFP Leader says they will rebuild their relationship with USP, return its leaders to Suva and design laws to protect USP from bad Fiji government behaviour.

Professor Prasad says they will begin preparations for local government elections so that people can have a voice in local government and they want to reduce the burden on poor people from e-ticketing, endless requirements for birth certificates and delays in their welfare payments.

He says they will begin work on national consultations on health, education, poverty and the economy.

The Party Leader called on people not to believe the FijiFirst Party’s lies about other parties like the NFP reducing welfare payments, reducing bus fares and free education.

Professor Prasad says these payments are an important part of every party’s policy, and will not be removed by the NFP.

He says they need to review TELS and tertiary education funding to strengthen free education as they know that poor management of TELS has left many young people burdened with debt.

Professor Prasad says again, they must listen to the students, their parents and the universities to find the best solutions and their aim is that those most in need receive the most support.

He further says they want to re-invigorate the sugar industry so that it also becomes value-adding and they want to pursue an economic platform built on new investment in agricultural exports, particularly organic foods, services such as business process outsourcing and medical tourism and tourism which will continue to be an important industry for Fiji.

Professor Prasad adds they will lift the entry ban of the Late Professor Brij Lal’s wife, Dr. Padma Lal to allow her return to Fiji with his ashes.
