The increasing trend of fire incidents during the festive season remains a concern across all regions.

National Fire Authority CEO Puamau Sowane says Christmas is a time for celebration, reflection, and, most importantly, for coming together with our loved ones and communities to create lasting memories, but also a time to remember the importance of safety, especially when it comes to fire risks.

He says during the holiday season, it is unfortunate to see a rise in fire-related incidents and adds that in recent years, fire incidents have spiked in December.

He adds in the Western Division, fires increased from 4 in 2021 to 11 in both 2022 and 2023, and the Central Division saw a steady rise in reported fires, from 20 in 2021 to 21 in 2022, and 18 in 2023.

Sowane says although the Northern Division had fewer incidents, with just 2 fires in 2021, these numbers serve as a timely reminder of the increasing fire risks during this festive period.

The CEO says as we enjoy the warmth and joy of the holiday season, we should also stay mindful of potential hazards.

He says simple precautions can help reduce the risk of fire, particularly when it comes to activities like cooking, decorating, and using electrical appliances.

Sowane says the NFA is always ready to support the people and their dedicated team is committed to helping ensure the people’s safety throughout the holiday season.
