NDMO urges caution as heavy rain and strong wind warnings remain across Fiji

The National Disaster Management Office is advising the people of Viti Levu, the Northern Division, and the Yasawa, Mamanuca to stay away from and refrain from attempting to cross or swim in flooded rivers, streams, drains, roads, and walkways where water is above knee level.

This advisory comes after the weather office in Nadi confirmed that the heavy rain alert remains in force in Viti Levu, Yasawa, Mamanuca, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, as well as the Moala and Southern Lau groups.

The NDMO emphasises that this warning is crucial for several reasons, all aimed at ensuring personal safety and minimizing the risk of life-threatening situations not only for the general public but also for their first responders.

They say that, as the strong wind alert remains in effect for the land areas of Vatulele, Beqa, Kadavu, and nearby smaller islands, Fijians living in these coastal areas should avoid themselves by engaging in recreational marine activities, as debris may be washed along coastal communities and roadways, posing a risk to everyone's safety.

They add that, with continuous rain recorded over the past few days, there is a possible risk of landslides in some areas.

The NDMO urges all Fijians to ensure that their households are prepared accordingly and to supervise their children at all times throughout the weekend.

They also remind members of the public to stay informed of the warnings and know the measures to stay safe.
