A mother and son are still traumatised after they were allegedly attacked outside their home by a man who reportedly tried to forcefully enter their house and rob them.

Vijaya Dulare, who lives with her son on Fulaga Street, Samabula says her son was taking the trash out to the skip bin across their house at about 8.10 last night when she saw him struggling on the varendah.

She says she saw a man with his face covered by a T-shirt holding her son tightly and blocking his mouth as he struggled to break free from his grip.

Dulare says the intruder tried to enter the house as her son kept pushing him, and managed to defend himself by kicking the masked intruder and pushing him down.

She says the intruder may have been high and weak and as a result went down the flight of stairs and upon hearing the commotion, the neighbours came out but by then, the intruder had escaped.

The mother says the police and the canine team came but they are not sure if they have made any progress.

She says people are not even safe in their own homes and adds going out to take the rubbish and being attacked highlights the sad state of the country.

They are calling on the police to step up as crime rates are increasing and criminals are becoming more audacious; it has become like an epidemic.

She says they hear about robberies in the media everyday and people would think it will not happen to them until it does.

The mother says these people have to be caught even if the crime is petty as there is a need to send strong messages because these thieves are taking the law for granted.

Dulare says these occurrences are becoming common and not isolated so there is a need for concrete plans from the defense team.

Police say the matter was reported and victims have given their statements.
