More than 50% of the eligible population in the Central Division are fully vaccinated for COVID-19, 60.5% are fully vaccinated in the Western Division, 14.1% in the Eastern Division and 36.2% in the North.

The Health Ministry says 567,751 adults in Fiji have received their first dose of the vaccine and 320,520 have received their second doses.

This means that 96.8% of the target population have received at least one dose and 54.6% are now fully vaccinated nationwide.

The Permanent Secretary for Health Doctor James Fong says they are in an advanced stage of planning to begin the vaccination of children under 18 years.

He says they will begin with children aged between 16 and 18 years.

Dr Fong further says this will involve a stringent process to ensure that parental or guardian consent is secured and online registration is encouraged prior to vaccination.

Dr Fong adds the required number of vials of the vaccine has been put aside to ensure this target population between 16 and 18 years can receive both doses of the vaccine.

He further says more stocks are expected to continue the vaccination of eligible children less than 18 years.

Dr Fong highlighted that any decision on the opening of schools will be contingent on how well this vaccination phase rolls out.
