More than 50% of the United Blind Persons for Fiji members have been let go from their jobs.

United Blind Persons of Fiji Chairperson of the National Disability Awards, Rajnel Prasad says most of these members were employed before as part-time workers and volunteers while some had short-term contracts.

He says since they have been let go, they have been living with their families who are facing some form of financial difficulty at the moment.

The Chairperson says they have assisted most of their members in Viti Levu by donating food rations and canes as one of the challenges that most of their members have told them are moving around and access to services.

Prasad says they are now planning to visit their Northern Division members in October or November.

He adds that they will not only be delivering food rations to members in the North but they will also be doing a membership drive where he is urging people that have a family member who is blind to register themselves as they can also provide them with assistance.

He says they will continue to assist their members during this time of crisis.

If any person or organisation would like to donate to the United Blind Persons for Fiji, they can take the items to their office at the Fiji National Council of Disabled Persons, 3 Brown Street, Suva or opposite Jai Narayan College Hall.
