More than 11,000 families in the Suva and Nausori lockdown areas have so far been assisted through government’s food assistance program as the distribution comes to an end at 6pm today.

Ministry of Economy Coordinator Kamal Gounder says they are aiming to assist around 4000 families today.

Registration for the ration packs ended yesterday.

Each food pack has eight items which includes one 4kg rice, 4kg flour, 1kg split peas, 500ml cooking oil, 4 tin fish, 100 grams of tea leaves, 2 packets of breakfast crackers and 300 grams packet of milk powder.

The cost of one pack was around $43.50.

We had received reports of some families getting more than one ration pack while some families did not receive the ration at all.

When questioned, Gounder says this is because in some houses there is more than one family.

He adds he understands that some families have not yet received the assistance which is why they will be distributing today as well.

Gounder has also revealed that they have so far distributed 2500 food packs to around 500 families who are in isolation or cordoned off areas.

He says these families are given food packs every two weeks until their isolation period is over.
