The Government is looking at developing 266 acres of land to pilot the affordable and climate-resilient housing project in the country, with the vision to eradicate squatter and informal settlements in the next 10 years.

This has been highlighted by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad while attending the Roadshow for the Public-Private Partnership for the Affordable Housing Project in Australia.

He says the Government aims to increase the supply for affordable and climate-resilient housing to eradicate squatter and informal settlements in the next 10 years.

Professor Prasad says with this objective, the Government has earmarked four sites in Davuilevu, Nepani, Wainibuku and Raiwaqa and a site in Tavakubu, Lautoka and Tavua to develop the first pilot project, which is expected to supply around 3,000 housing units that will be climate resilient, green and Category 5 cyclone compliant structures.

He says the Government has commenced the bidding process and they would like to select a private developer for the development of the project, and commence the construction before mid-2024.

More than 120 interested companies, contractors, bidders, and financial institutions attended the Roadshow organised in Auckland, New Zealand and Brisbane, Australia.
