Nausori Airport held its full-scale aircraft emergency exercise – code named Crash Exercise 2022 earlier this week as Fiji Airports says it has no plans in lowering its guard when it comes to aircraft emergency preparedness.

The mock exercise allowed Fiji Airport’s staff, ground handling agents, airlines and government agencies to test the robustness of their emergency procedures.

This year’s exercise scenario simulated a crash landing on Nausori Airport’s Threshold Runway 10.

The scenario allows all stakeholders to test their coordination and processes in tackling an aircraft crash and rescue crisis.

Nausori Airport Manager, Vula Seru says the aim of the mock exercise was to test the level of preparedness of each agency during an aircraft accident.

Fiji Airport’s General Manager Air Traffic Management and Operations, Amit Singh says safety is always top priority for them and this aircraft crash exercise provided a valuable opportunity for the airport community to test its readiness in responding to contingencies at Nausori Airport.

Singh says with the completion of the exercises, they have crossed another milestone in preparing for an emergency at Nausori Airport.

Volunteers from Nadali, Naselai and Nausori villages role-played as passengers and families of affected passengers.

Fiji Airports conducts drills, exercises and training seminars regularly, covering a variety of operational disruptions and emergency scenarios, including severe weather, system failure, equipment malfunctions, public health incidents, security incidents among others.
