People of Moala in Lau will soon have another source of income as British American Tobacco, in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, has handed over a greenhouse complete with seedlings to the island.

The Ministry says the greenhouse is intended to supply seedlings for various cash crops and vegetables that mature quickly and are suitable for immediate consumption.

British American Tobacco General Manager, Sam Dormer says the greenhouse provide an environment for the seedlings to grow more robustly and so once those seedlings are more robust they are able to be transferred to the local farmers so they can be transplanted into the ground and give them a greater chance of survival.

He says it diversifies the diet of many Fijians as they have been provided eggplants, chillies and tomato seedlings that mature very quickly and are meant for almost immediate consumption.

Dormer says they have also provided seedlings in Nadarivatu and Tutu in the Northern Division.

He adds later this year, he plans to do one in Kadavu and one in Savusavu.
