The Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection is working with the Police to investigate the circumstances surrounding a video circulating on social media depicting a child allegedly consuming alcohol.

Minister Sashi Kiran says they are deeply concerned about this incident, and it is not only distressing but it is a direct violation of Fiji's laws aimed at protecting the rights and well-being of children.

She says under the new Child Care and Protection Act 2024, children are afforded special protection, and their safety and welfare are paramount.

Kiran says the legal drinking age in Fiji is 18 years old, and actions involving children consuming alcohol or being exposed to such harmful behaviour are a clear violation of this legal framework.

She says children need our love and protection, and those around them are supposed to provide this, however, increasingly we see that adults and carers are found to be the ones violating these children.

The Minister adds that they are committed to ensuring that all children are safe from harm and any breaches of the law will be dealt with accordingly.

She urges the public to refrain from sharing such harmful content and to report any concerns to the relevant authorities, as we all have a role to play in safeguarding the well-being of our children.

She says they are taking this matter seriously, and necessary actions will be taken to address the situation appropriately.

The Minister adds they will continue to work diligently with the relevant law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety of our children and uphold the rights of every Fijian child.

Meanwhile, Police have started an investigation into the incident.

The photo shows the child with the glass almost to his lips.

Police say an investigation is underway considering the action of the adults and the welfare of the child according to law.

If you are facing any issues regarding child abuse or violence, please contact the child helpline, 1325.
