The Ministry of iTaukei Affairs is helping strengthen the empowerment of women through the signing of a memorandum of understanding to support the Women in Fisheries Network in Fiji.

The Women in Fisheries Network in Fiji facilitates the networks and partnerships that enable women to have the tools to manage all aspects of sustainable fisheries.

It has 85 members and has conducted multiple outreach programs on sustainable fisheries.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs Meleti Bainimarama says today’s signing will help grow the number of Fijians involved in fisheries and will be benefitting from these programs.

Meleti says they will be able to help resource users be better equipped with the knowledge and skills to manage their local resources in the sea.

He says those who depend on the sea as a source of income will need to be supported and empowered.

He says many Fijians are involved in the fishery sector which has a huge made huge contributions to the economy, the education system, and the health systems.

Executive Board Member of the Women in Fisheries Network Fiji Mereseini Seniloli says the collaboration will foster the research and the exchange of information to help in making policies.

She says the parties have their responsibilities to ensure the Memorandum’s purpose is achieved.
