The Ministry of Health and Medical Services is issuing a preliminary advisory to inform the public about a recent incident involving a chemical spill in the Walu Bay Creek area, which resulted in a dark blue colouration of the Walu Bay River.

They say their team has conducted an initial inspection and identified the leak of a chemical dye from a private company located in the vicinity.

The Ministry says according to the information received, the leaked chemical resulted from a ruptured drum from the company site, which ultimately found its way into the river.

They say the company had promptly reported the incident to the Ministry of Environment last night.

The Ministry of Health and Environmental Health team has already taken a few samples of the chemical and sent it to the laboratory for analysis.

They say the Ministry of Environment will be meeting with the company to determine the appropriate course of action and potential clean up options.

This includes swimming, fishing, or any other activities that involve direct contact with the water.

They say it is likely that aquatic life, flora, and fauna in the water system will be impacted while they understand that this may cause inconvenience, it is essential to prioritize health and safety.

The Ministry says a subsequent advisory will be provided once further details on the nature of the chemical is available which will outline specific precautionary measures if required.

They assure the public that they are closely monitoring the situation and working in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and other relevant authorities to address this issue promptly and effectively.

The Ministry of Health adds their primary concern is the well-being of the community, and they will continue to provide timely updates and guidance as the situation progresses.
